Educational
Programs
Our guiding principle is "All Children Can Learn: If Educators
have the will to Educate Children; The Children Will Learn."
Therefore, the educational programs for our schools are designed
to cultivate a love for learning that will lead to scholarship-and
eventually to high school graduation. The integration of arts and
academics is essential to us. Our teachers will use the arts to
teach academics, and academics to teach the arts. Parents/Caregivers
will contribute systematically to curriculum development by giving
their perspectives on topics as well as methods of presenting those
topics at the school. Children will also share this responsibility.
As a result of these strategies, the curriculum will be enhanced,
enriched, and more relevant to our children.
As
an inclusive model, all instruction will involve team teaching and
children will be grouped together in mixed ability groups in small
learning communities where they can learn from their peers as well
as their instructors. Special needs children may receive additional
support in individual or small group sessions.
The
community, including a wide variety of arts-related and support
service agencies, organizations, and institutions will be actively
involved in the life of the schools.
Our mentors monitor our ninth grade graduates who reside within
a 50 mile radius of the schools until they complete high school
Our
Curriculum
In order to help all children meet and exceed state performance
standards our curriculum provides:
-
Rigorous, comprehensive and developmentally appropriate study
in mathematics, science/heath, music, fine arts, citizenship,
reading, language arts, social studies, history, and life skills
development;
-
Hands-on project based instruction;
-
The arts integrated throughout the academic curriculum;
-
Technology integrated throughout the curriculum with emphasis
on literacy;
-
Meaningful parent involvement and decision making; and
-
Character-based Life Skills Instruction and Discipline Program.
Goals
Too many children from all ethnic backgrounds do not complete high
school including white males. We aim to increase literacy and graduation
rates of all urban children. In this pursuit, we will decrease discipline
problems that result in suspensions or expulsions, and the achievement
gap between urban and majority children.
